Berba: I'm Not Lazy

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has hit back at claims that he is unprofessional and lazy, insisting instead that he is "alert"...

t has often been said that Wayne Rooney is too unselfish. Indeed, Sir Alex Ferguson has often called for the England forward to do less grunt-work and focus on scoring goals.

The United boss is unlikely to have the same issue with new recruit Berbatov.

The Bulgarian hit-man has earned superstar status since joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2006, his silky touch and his eye for both a pass and a goal catapulting him into the Premier League's elite.

However, question marks remain regarding the 27-year-old's output off the ball. At Spurs it was his strike partner, Robbie Keane, who did the bulk of the running - and while some would argue that was why they were such an interesting and effective pairing, others would say it demonstrates a lack of endeavour on Berbatov's part.

Ex-Bayer Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler said of his former charge: “Berbatov has a Brazilian mentality. Someone should always kick his ass.”

But Berbatov dismissed the notion that his laconic nature stems from laziness and claimed that what he lacks in back-tracking he makes up for in attacking awareness.

He said in The Sun: “I can’t run pointlessly. That’s why sometimes I look lazy. But I am always alert. I wait for my chance then try not to miss it.”
