Ferguson confirms bid for new player
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Manchester United have lodged a bid for at least one new player during this summer's transfer window but refused to reveal the identity of his number one target.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov is believed to be the man at the top of the European Champions' shopping list and it has been widely reported in the English press that Spurs rejected a £20million bid earlier this week.
On Thursday Ferguson confirmed a bid had been lodged for an unnamed target which he hoped would lead to a successful conclusion.
'We have made a bid for one player who would enhance us a great deal,' said Ferguson.
And on the same day that Ferguson admitted to a foray into the transfer market Ramos refused to rule out selling either Berbatov, or Robbie Keane, who is being tracked by Liverpool, and revealed that some top clubs have shown interest in the pair.
Ramos told AS: 'We will see what happens there, but we are talking about two very important players. For the moment they are with us, but whatever happens the idea is to have a great squad, with the potential to allow us to aim to improve on what we managed last season.
'We have to be realistic and see what we are starting with and who we are competing against. There are some big clubs who have spent a lot of money over many years and have a certain advantage; in fact they claim they want to sign some of our players.'
Tottenham are thought to be holding out for more cash but whether United are prepared to go beyond the £20million that has been mentioned is doubtful.
In any case, it would be handy for Spurs to get the money in quickly as manager Juande Ramos looks to rejig his own squad, with a big-money move for David Bentley in the offing.
Any deal for Berbatov could move much closer over the next fortnight, although with Ferguson and chief executive David Gill both on the plane for United's tour of South Africa and Nigeria, it will be left to club solicitor Maurice Watkins, who found himself at the centre of the Carlos Tevez affair last summer, to deal with any on-the-spot issues.

Fletcher plays down transfer speculation
Darren Fletcher insists the only person he will listen about any speculation linking him with a move away from Old Trafford is Sir Alex Ferguson.
As most of the talk around Manchester United this summer has concerned Cristiano Ronaldo, not too much attention has been devoted to Fletcher.
Yet, after finding his first-team opportunities severely restricted last term, it is little wonder some pundits believe it would be better if the Scotland international moved on.
Boyhood favourites Celtic might be one option, while plenty of United's Premier League rivals would be interested in Fletcher found himself on the market.
However, the 23-year-old is not allowing himself to get distracted by such rumours. And, as United embark on their tour of South Africa, the Dalkeith-born player is content to concentrate on that.
'The speculation does not get on my nerves,' he told MUTV.
'At this time of year, people make news out of nothing. You learn to deal with that here.
'The most important thing is to remain focussed on Manchester United unless anyone tells you otherwise that is what you do.'
There has been no indication from Ferguson that Fletcher is surplus to requirements.
Indeed, the United boss appears more intent on bringing players in, and sorting out a new assistant following the departure of highly-regarded Carlos Queiroz to coach the Portugal national side.
Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov remains high on United's hit-list, although Ferguson will not be held to ransom for the Bulgarian.
And even though the Red Devils will not be back in the UK for almost a fortnight as they play against the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates before taking on Portsmouth in Nigeria on July 27, attempts to bring in new faces will continue.
• Meanwhile, Owen Hargreaves was the most notable absentee from the 21-man Manchester United squad which set off today for their four-match tour of Africa.
Hargreaves spent most of last season battling against a knee injury, although he did play in the Champions League final win over Chelsea in Moscow.
However, after missing Saturday's friendly at Aberdeen, Hargreaves also remains behind today as Sir Alex Ferguson and his team set off on a tour that will take them to South Africa and Nigeria.
Also missing were Nani, Edwin van der Sar and Patrice Evra, who all played at Euro 2008, as did Cristiano Ronaldo, but the winger has already been ruled out due to an ankle operation.
However, the rest of United's squad, including Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Ryan Giggs, were on the flight to Cape Town, along with skipper Gary Neville, who was restricted to one first-team game last season due to an ankle problem but is now fully fit as United look to defend their European and Premier League trophies.

`UNITED AGREE RECORD TEVEZ DEAL`
Manchester United have agreed a deal to secure the permanent signing of Carlos Tevez, according to reports.
Various newspapers on Saturday claim that a British record transfer fee of between £32million and £35million to make the Argentinian's current loan agreement permanent.
Tevez is currently still 'owned' by Kia Joorabchian's MSI group, and is in the middle of a two-year loan at Old Trafford.
United paid a fee of around £10million to secure the loan deal last summer, although The Guardian reports it is unclear how much - if any - of this fee will go towards the permanent deal.
United chief executive David Gill said earlier this week that securing the permanent signing of the Argentinian was a priority for Alex Ferguson, but not until next year.
Gill said: "We have spoken to Carlos Tevez and see him as part of our long-term squad. We have been pleased with his first season. He is a good age, a great player and well liked within the team. We know what we have to do and what we have to pay next summer."
However, The Independent claims that United accelerated plans to secure Tevez after a number of top European clubs showed an interest in the player, and quote a 'source close to the player' as saying:
"A number of interested parties want to talk to Carlos but his heart is with Manchester United and he does not want to go anywhere else. He wants to secure his future at Old Trafford."
This deal will inevitably lead to questions over United's pursuit of Dimitar Berbatov.
However, The Independent claims that the Tevez deal has always been budgeted for, and will not impact on any potential move for the Spurs striker.
If it goes through, the deal would top the £30million paid by Chelsea for Andriy Shevchenko two years ago, and would be the third time United have broken the British transfer record in recent times, having paid £28million and £29million for Juan Sebastian Veron and Rio Ferdinand respectively.
