Reina keeps Liverpool Champions League hopes alive
Liverpool's players were happy to escape with a 0-0 draw in the first-leg of their Champions League qualifier at Standard Liege.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez handed Robbie Keane and Andrea Dossena their competitive debuts, while he also gave Damien Plessis a start in midfield.
Just ten minutes into his debut, Dossena handled Wilfried Dalmat's cross. It appeared like the contact with the ball was outside the box, however the referee awarded a penalty to Liege.
Dante's penalty lacked power and was knocked away by Reds keeper Pepe Reina. Liege also had an earlier effort from Marouane Fellaini superbly cleared off the line by Reina.
A speculative Xabi Alonso effort that landed on the roof of the net was the closest Liverpool went in a disappointing first 45 minutes and it showed no signs of improving at the start of the second.
Leige again went close through a Igor de Camargo header in the 65th minute and while Rafa Benitez introduced Steven Gerrard for an out-of-sorts Keane, the Merseysiders still could not get into the game.
Reina punched away another De Camargo header seven minutes later but a tame Gerrard free-kick in stoppage time was the closest the visitors went to taking a lead back to Anfield.
